About Winter Weekends

See and feel this place in a new way.

Winter Weekends has been going for 16 years, starting with flagship events like the world famous Dachshund Dash (it literally got on the news in Germany, and Ipswich). We brighten the cold months in fresh ways. Get to know our town, its people, locales and stories in the most refreshing time of the year.

Our events fall under 4 main pillars:

Community

Mostly free of charge, always heart-filling, these events are designed to connect people with people and people with place or ideas. Often hosted by dedicated volunteer groups committed to nurturing a town as only die-hard vollies can, come along and hear the stories, meet the faces and vibe the hearts of our community. Our soul. (That sounds deep because it is) It all starts with our opening night party at the Goods Shed. Bring your beanie, mates and moves… we’ll have the mulled wine.

Arts

These are the events where creative pulses come beat-beat-beating to life. Think performance, music, painting, design, photography, craft, sculpture, fashion, ceramic, film, literature and more. Artists and their works, shared and showcased. From emerging efforts to established makers, we present local arts alongside visiting and resident talent too.

Food & Wine

Fine and fancy and the humble homemade, it’s all served with love and local flavour. Events range from the boozy to the baby-friendly and are designed to ignite the senses, connect you with producers, chefs and makers and leave you feeling oh so satisfied and still, oddly, hungry for more.

Environment

Lava flows, black basalt, ginormous pine trees, Southern Ocean, East Beach, Griffiths Island, marshlands, riverside, parks, greens, paths, volcano craters. Wide open coastline and secret out-of-the-way bays. Bird life, marine life, wild life - LIFE! This place has Aboriginal, colonial and contemporary stories sweeping far and wide. Let the pristine landscape take you in a warm, comforting hold, then reinvigorate with a wild rush of the freshest of fresh air. All under super skies that shine at dawn, glow at sunset and sparkle in the big dark of night.

Volunteer with us

As a community festival, all the work behind the scenes and on event day is delivered by awesome volunteers. If you are looking for a friendly, fun, interesting and inclusive bunch to hang out with this winter, look no further, we’d love to have you! Plus you get access to events and that feel-great factor of giving back to the brilliant place in which you live.
