Winter Weekends is super excited to include one of favourite places on the program this year. Hosted by the team from Worn Gundidj, these tours and dinners are designed to give us a closer look, and taste, at what’s inside this ancient volcanic crater. Over the afternoon and evening, you get an overview of European destruction of the reserve and its restoration; indigenous history and culture with didgeridoo playing and boomerang throwing lessons; a presentation on Robin Boyd and Tower Hill architecture; an evening meal of Australian native foods and flavours and a night walk to discover nocturnal animals and wildlife. Wow! A special winter opportunity to experience all Tower Hill has to offer.

Take a trip way, way back in time to learn about one of the world’s oldest human settlements. For thousands of years, Gunditjmara people engineered an extensive aquaculture system of eel and fish traps along the Tyrendarra lava flow and wetlands. Here you will see remnant houses, rebuilt stone houses, aquaculture traps and channels and the rainbow serpent’s eggs. With water flowing and peaking, winter is the best time to witness this ancient place in full life.

Want to feel the air on your skin? A lap around the island is always a good idea, especially in the wild, windy weather of winter. And what better way to be lured out to the tip of Port Fairy, than with an open house at the most iconic spot in town. Climb the stairs and take in the view to imagine the life of a lighthouse keeper. A rare opportunity to visit the internal workings of the historic lighthouse that has been in operation since 1859. Please note: this event is subject to weather‑check with the Tourist Info Centre on the day.
